Luqman

  1. Perform wudu (ablution) before sleeping, so you sleep in a state of purity, and the angels will pray for those who are pure.
  2. Recite the bedtime dua, such as “Bismika Allahumma ahya wa bismika amut” which means: “In Your name, O Allah, I live and in Your name I die.”
  3. read verses from the Qur’an, such as Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, which serve as protection from the disturbance of shaytan.
  4. Lie down on your right side with your right hand under your cheek, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
  5. Dust off your bed before lying on it, so it is clean from dust, insects, or anything harmful that may not be visible.
  6. Do dhikr (remembrance of Allah) until you fall asleep, so the heart becomes calm and the sleep more peaceful.
  7. Avoid sleeping too late at night, so it is easier to wake up for Fajr prayer and be more energized in the morning.

Wisdom of Observing Sleep Etiquette

By following these manners, a Muslim’s sleep is not only physical rest but also becomes an act of worship. They are protected from shaytan, their heart is calmed with dua and dhikr, and their body is healthier with proper sleeping habits.
